How Stress Affects The Gut

Many many women who are taking thyroid medication STILL suffer these low thyroid symptoms, even though their lab tests are “normal.”

When your stress doesn’t turn off, your body is bathed in hormones and neurotransmitters that can damage your gut bacteria and your intestinal lining. It affects your mood, sleep, and energy, and produces increased levels of inflammation.

I’m joined by Dr. George Papanicolaou this week on The doctor’s Farmacy where we discuss the Functional Medicine matrix as a construct for getting to the root of disease. We talk through the example of small intestine bacterial overgrowth or SIBO, sharing success stories and some really interesting and unique healing paths for different patients dealing with the same diagnosis.

Dr. Papanicolaou is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and is Board Certified in Family Medicine from Abington Memorial Hospital. Over time as the healthcare system made it harder for patients to receive personal care, Dr. Papanicolaou decided a change was needed. He began training in Functional Medicine through the Institute of Functional Medicine. In 2015, he established Cornerstone Personal Health—a practice dedicated entirely to Functional Medicine. In August 2017, I invited Dr. Papanicolaou to join The UltraWellness Center and we’ve been successfully helping people together ever since.
